I’ll Never Be A Redhead…and 16 Candles

Niecey Roy

A Sucker for Smooches and Happily-Ever-Afters...anything romance. Serious obsession with shoes, lover of life and often guilty of snorting when I laugh. www.nieceyroy.com

I love romantic comedy. Movies, books, you name it, this girl wants to read it, to watch it, to lose myself in all it’s silliness, the butterflies in the tummy, breathless first kisses, the laughter, the drama—I love, love, love it. I suppose you can see why I choose to write humorous contemporary romance . I just can’t get enough of it!

One of my favorite romantic comedies is 16 Candles. I remember when I was a kid I wanted to be just like Samantha when I grew up. Ha! I was also going to score me a totally hot boyfriend who looked just like Jake-y. My high school days would be filled with romance and drama and I was going to end up sitting Indian-style on a glass coffee table across from my Jake-y on my 16th birthday. There was no other way life could possibly turn out. Nope.

Of course, my life didn’t quite play out that way.  Not only did my hair not turn red, but I didn’t get freckles, either. And, since I have dark black hair and naturally tan skin (I’m half Filipino, half Polish, what-a mix!) I’ll never be able

to color my hair red. I would look ridiculous as a redhead. However, I did fall in love with a dark haired hunk who I met in high school. Unfortunately, he was kinda already taken so I spent most of my high school years daydreaming about him. So no, I didn’t end up Indian-style on a glass coffee table with him on my 16th birthday, but been lucky enough to spend every birthday since my 22nd birthday with him. I’d say that’s pretty good :)

Though I can’t ever be and won’t ever be a redhead, in my new release, , the female protagonist, Rach, is a sassy REDHEAD who doesn’t drive so well :)

So I’m curious, were you as obsessed with 16 Candles as I was? Did you swear to your best friends, your journal, to your reflection in the mirror that your first romance would be just like in the movie? And if 16 Candles isn’t your favorite romantic comedy flick, what is?

Thanks for stopping by!

It’s been a long time since I watched SIXTEEN CANDLES. I did watch THE HOLIDAY with Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz not long ago. It’s a fabulously romantic movie.

There are so many good romantic comedies, but I think the greatest one ever made was The Philadelphia Story with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. It’s super old, 1940, but still hilarious and romantic. If you haven’t seen it, you must, seriously!

You are not the first person who has told me how amazing The Philadelphia Story, so I clearly need to watch it! I think I’ll look for it this weekend. Cary Grant…I love him!

The Holiday is one of my favorites! Jude Law…what eyes! Plus, I LOVE both Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. Wouldn’t it be marvelous to switch houses with someone like that??? Only in a rom-com flick does that happen, ha! Thanks for hangin’ out with me, ladies :)

Well, I have to say, I’m a little old for Sixteen Candles. I did watch it as an adult. But, I do love romantic comedies. Fun post!

I didn’t see Sixteen Candles until I was much older I am sorry to say, but I did spend my high school years dreaming of a certain boy. Never got anywhere with him though. The Holiday has always been my favorite movie.

Quilt Lady, it seems that The Holiday is a favorite of many for RomCom flicks :)

  • Ilona Fridl [ 07Feb13]

Although it turns out sadly, my favorite romantic movie has to be Casablanca.

Hi, Niecey! So glad you are now a part of ABM! I love romantic comedies. Like others, THE HOLIDAY is a new favorite of mine. Jack Black actually makes a nice romantic hero in this movie. I also love YOU’VE GOT MAIL. Love Tom Hanks in this one. And the ending always, always makes me cry. THE WEDDING PLANNER is good, too. Although they never kiss and get together, John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn do have some great sparring in ROOSTER COGBURN. I could go on, and on!

    Great post!

    Hi Neicey,

Oh, I love all of those Brat pack movies from the 80s! Sixteen Candles is indeed one of the best romantic ones.

As a ‘grown up’, one of my favorite ones now is “27 Dresses” with Katherine Heigel It’s super, super cute…and there’s a super cute guy in that one, too! (Isn’t there always?!)

I grew up with all those movies (Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire) But I have to say, When Harry Met Sally is my all time favorite. I’m drawn to the geeks–rooting for Anthony Michael Hall all the way in 16 Candles and was disappointed when she ended up with the hairy eyebrow guy.

Your comments about redheads made me smile, Niecey. My grandmother, a redhead, had one redhead among her six children, and took it a personal affront that only one of her 14 grandchildren had red hair. She must be smiling in heaven, however, because among her great-grandchildren are 3 redheads and a couple with decidedly red highlights.

Fender Bender Blues sounds like a fun read! I love romantic comedies too. ’16 Candles’ is actually after my time, (don’t tell anyone!) but my all time favorite rom coms are 30s screwball comedies like Bringing Up Baby or My Man Godfrey.
